We have lived in
Benedicta (actually T2R6) since 1978. At that time we
were the first people "from away" (we moved
from West Sebois) to live in Benedicta. Back then my
wife and I both worked at the Great Northern mill in
Millinocket, and since there was no Benedicta exit off
Interstate 95 we car pooled from the Texaco station at
Sherman Mills.
Because of this, and
since so many of our fellow workers at the mill were
from Millinocket,
East
Millinocket, Benedicta,
Sherman
Mills, Stacyville,
Grindstone,
Medway,
Patten,
Island
Falls, Oakfield
and Lincoln we have
developed many friendships in the Katahdin Valley over
the years.
In the early 1980's,
before our newly planted orchard was bearing fruit, we
used to yearly visit the old abandoned Mulles orchard
in Stacyville where the Grindstone Road meets the
Stacyville Road. In this orchard is a very old pear
tree, which now goes by the name Stacy, that is
offered by St.
Lawrence Nurseries
in upstate New York.
