By
alternative software, I am referring to something other than a
Windows XP
or
2000
desktop running
Microsoft Office
and
Internet Explorer
as a WEB browser and
Outlook
for
e-mail. In other words, different operating systems,
office software, and browsers.
By virtuality, I
mean the use of virtual machines, emulation software,
and translation layer software to either run entire
virtual operating systems in separate memory areas
within a host operating system, or else just to run
certain software not intended to run on a host OS by
using a translation layer, such as Wine.
